How has your experience as a military spouse shaped the way you approach family law?
My experience as a military spouse gave me firsthand knowledge of the unique pressures military life can place on a marriage and a family. I understand frequent moves, being away from family, extended periods away from your spouse, and trying to build a career and raise a family around the demands of military service.
That experience also informs how I approach military divorce. I understand why a service member may feel deeply connected to the retirement and benefits earned over the course of a career, and I understand the perspective of a military spouse who may have put his or her own career on hold to support the family, only to find the marriage ending.
Divorce and custody are difficult for any family, but military families often face an additional layer of complexity. I’m familiar with those realities, including how relocation, PCS orders, deployments, and other demands of military service can affect custody and parenting time. Having lived military life myself gives me a perspective that goes beyond simply knowing the law.
What do you want clients to understand before their first consultation with you?
I want clients to understand that my job is to provide advice and counsel based on my years of experience, the law, and the specific facts of their case. That includes giving my opinion about possible outcomes and, most importantly, helping clients manage their expectations.
Sometimes that means giving a client advice or information that may not be what they want to hear. But I believe it is far better to have an honest and realistic understanding of your case from the beginning than to be surprised by an outcome you were never prepared for.
Family law is unpredictable, and no attorney can guarantee what will happen in a courtroom. My job is to make sure my clients understand the possibilities—the good and the bad—so that when they walk into court, they are prepared and do not feel as though they were hit by a bus when they walk out.
How do you develop a strategy when a family law case is particularly complex or high-conflict?
The first thing I do is listen. I need to understand the specific facts of the client’s case and learn about the family involved. While certain themes—relocation, domestic violence, custody disputes, complex financial issues—may appear frequently in family law, every family is different. There is no one-size-fits-all strategy.
I also need to understand what is important to my client: their priorities, their values, and ultimately what they hope to accomplish. From there, I consider the larger picture—the jurisdiction, the history of the litigation, the behavior and dynamics between the parties, whether the other party is represented, and, when applicable, opposing counsel.
Then we develop a strategy designed around that particular client and that particular case. The goal isn’t simply to fight for the sake of fighting. It’s to be deliberate about the decisions we make and to pursue a strategy that gives the client the best opportunity to accomplish the goals that matter most to them.
